Our traditional wet markets are the essence of Kuching. From their early days as informal gatherings of rural producers coming down to the capital to trade, they have become an institution. They are the best place to meet Borneo’s unusual produce, the start of what to eat in Kuching. They are the first place to meet Kuching’s many communities, brought together for that early morning kickstart of coffeetalk.
Many of our traders are now in their third generation. Many of their customers too. A visit to Kuching’s markets offers immediate immersion into community, each one with their own identity. Pick a market, find a kopitiam nearby and watch the parade.
The makeup of the market is an exercise in egalitarianism, with low entry costs and overheads.
